The call came in late in the evening, and I knew something was wrong.

My Mom, sounding tired, says “Kris, I just want to let you know that your uncle is in the hospital waiting for heart surgery”. This is not the first time my mom has called me with news like this, except the last time my relative was not as fortunate.

I take in the information and am reminded, for the second time in a few months, how serious a sedentary lifestyle, poor food choices and high stress is on our hearts. I hang up the phone feeling sad and helpless and think about how precious life really is and how important it is to take care of ourselves.

I am a mom. I know what matters to me in life and I know I want to live long enough to see my son grow into a man. In fact I want to live long enough to meet my Grandchildren.

If I don’t take care of my body on a daily basis, nobody else is going to.

If I told you that without daily physical activity PERICARDIAL FAT accumulates on the heart muscle increasing your risk of heart disease, does that scare you? It scares the crap out of me! Exercising the heart muscle through cardiovascular activities like jogging, swimming, dancing and biking, make our heart stronger and at less risk for disease.

It takes 30 minutes (at least) of walking every day to keep your heart strong. How many hours of TV do you watch a week? How many hours of sitting on your commute or at a desk? How many minutes a day do you spend on Facebook?

Could you instead spend half an hour a day being active?

The world has changed so much, some things for the better and some for the worse. Spending a lot of time on the computer or sitting doing any task for long periods of time is not good for your health or happiness. If you do tend to lead a more sedentary lifestyle, a good rule of thumb is to move around, walk, get up and stretch every 30-60 minutes of sitting and perform more intense consistent cardio activity for 30 minutes or more, most days of the week.

Knowing that heart disease ranks second as the leading causes of premature death in both men and women, is that motivation enough to get your body moving?
